Chapter 18

“If it's a forgery,” Mia said, “then it's a particularly well-made one.”

Lucian looked between the two handkerchiefs on Mia's desk. “So you think it's the real deal?”

“If I had to choose, then yes. But that's only my opinion.”

“Well, it's a valuable opinion to me.”

After their outing to take out the rebels that were trying to assassinate Lucian, he and Emilia returned to the castle and immediately sought out Mia. As a princess, she was in a unique position to check out the handkerchief that was embroidered with the Almekian family crest.

She had her own handkerchief with the same design, which was a perfect match to the one taken from the rebel who tried to flee the scene. When placed side by side, the only way to tell the handkerchiefs apart was the color of the threads.

“Mia, you said that princesses can't take the throne, right?”

“Yes. We can only be married off to whichever man ascends, if it comes to that.”

“But what about a king's relatives? Is there a line of succession in case the king dies before producing a male heir?”

“That largely depends on the reputation of the ones in question. If there's a close relative with support from the noble class, then he will likely take the throne. But if not, there may be a civil war to determine who will rule.”

“A close relative with a good reputation…” Lucian thought upon a certain man he met at the party to celebrate his survival. “Mia, if the royal family had been completely wiped out, what do you think the chances are that our uncle Henrik would have taken the throne?”

“Uncle Henrik…” Mia made a thoughtful face. “He is well-known for his successful magitech business, giving him deep connections with powerful merchants. On top of that, being an Archduke and the brother to the king places him in a unique position of power…”

“So, it's likely.”

“Yes, I believe he would be the first choice to rule, had you succumbed to the disease.”

“Um.” Emilia made a small sound. “Are you saying Archduke Henrik is the one behind the assassination?”

The foxgirl had just recently reverted from her Berserked state, and she was still embarrassed by her arrogant actions and comments, which were still fresh in her memory.

“He's the most likely candidate,” Lucian said. “But we can't just assume without proof.”

“Should you send someone to investigate him, then?”

“That's a little difficult. We have spies for missions like that, but I don't know if I can trust them with such a task.” Lucian sighed. “It's really frustrating to not know who I can rely on.”

“If investigation is difficult,” Mia said, “then perhaps setting a trap is the better option.”

“A trap, huh? Not a bad idea. What did you have in mind?”

“If he's truly after your life, then he will surely jump at an opportunity to do so. All we must do is pass information to him and only him. If an assassin appears, then we will know the truth.”

“That's true, but it's also dangerous…”

“If you're
